What Makes Us Different?
.
Shaheed Lt. Gautam Gurung, SM, was born to Brig Puran Singh Gurung, YSM and his wife Smt. Pushplata Gurung on 23 Aug 1973. He joined 3/4 GR, the very battalion his father commanded. Serving in Tangdhar Sector, on 05 Aug 1998, while trying to save his wounded comrade in heavy cross border shelling, he laid down his life in the truest tradition of courage and sacrifice. For his selfless bravery, he was awarded SENAMEDAL.
In 2006, Brig P S Gurung started the Shaheed Lt. Gautam Gurung Trust and began to promote boxing, education and culture in Uttarakhand.
In 2015, the Gorkhas of Uttarakhand came together to celebrate 200 years of Gorkha Recruitment in the army. The tremendous response of the event led the organisers to create a platform that would ensure a constant connect among the Gorkha population. This led to the formation of RADIO GHAM CHHAYA that began to air as a one hour programme from 90.4 FM RADIO KHUSHI.

CSR Funding by ONGC to RGC
Radio Gham Chhaya started as an idea to connect the marginalised Gorkha community of Uttarakhand so that together we could preserve our Nepali language, culture and heritage. It was thanks to the Corporate Social Responsibility Funding of the ONGC that made it possible for us to build out studio, equip it and to then construct the tower and transmitters. It launched us on a journey ofĀ possibilities.Ā Ā Ā
UNESCO RADIO FELLOWSHIP
Radio Gham Chhaya competed in an open forum of community radio stations across India and won the UNESCO Radio Fellowship. It entailed us to do 8 radio stories of UN SDG goal “Life on Land”. We collected old forgotten stories of indigenous Kirat community along with lostĀ songs and did the programme in Nepali – which was the first time for the UNESCO Radio Fellowship from India.
MoU between Radio Gham Chhaya and Music Nepal
Music Nepal has been an able supporting ofĀ Radio Gham Chhaya. We have signed an MoU with them. This entails that all songs that play on our programmes. The MoU allows us free access to all their songs – old and new and it is without any charges. It also leaves us free of any copyright issues. For their generosity we are always grateful.
Gorkha Nama
For most people Gorkhas are seen and believedĀ to be part of the Raj – that they came to India bought by the British. But the reality is that Gorkhas came to India as conquerors. History has it that way back around 1780s the Gorkha came and conquered parts of Sikkim.Ā
In 1970 at the behest of a Garhwali nobleman the Gorkha army crossed River Kali and conquered Kumaon. In 1904 Garhwal fell to the Gorkha army which continued to what was then called Punjab Hills (Himachal Pradesh) capturing Sabathu (Shimla Hills) The Gorkha territory spread from Testa to Sutlej – 14000 miles. The British East India hadĀ

GORKHANAMA
GORKHANAMAĀ was a video made by Madhu Gurung toĀ commemorate the 200 years of Gorkha recruitment in the army. Once the Anglo Gorkha war ended and the Treaty of Sagauli was signed in 1815 between the Nepal Darbar and the British the Gorkhas were recruited. In 2015 the Gorkhas celebrated the Gorkha Dui Satabdi Mahotsav – aĀ four day event in Dehradun. The Gorkhanama highlights the proud history and the present ongoing situation of the Gorkhas.Ā Ā
The logo used for the Gorkhanam later went on to style and shape the logo used for Radio Gham Chhaya. This video is in three parts and should be seen in totality to understand the entire story.Ā
